Every year, on November 11th, the Independence March is held on the streets of Warsaw. Poles celebrate the regaining of Poland’s sovereignty in 1918, after 123 years of foreign occupation. The march is organized by activists of the extreme right-wing groups: the “March of Independence” (“Marsz Niepodległości”) Association, the National Radical Camp (ONR – Obóz Narodowo-Radykalny) and the All-Polish Youth (Młodzież Wszechpolska).
The event is attended by citizens from all over Poland – families with children, fans, politicians. On this occasion, Hungarian and Italian extreme organisations, such as Forza Nuova, are also invited. Participants gather in the center of Warsaw at the Roman Dmowski’s roundabout and then they go along the Poniatowski Bridge, in front of the National Stadium.
The organizers declare that it is part of the country’s celebration of the National Independence Day. However, the opponents of the march accuse the organizers of promoting fascism, racism and anti-Semitism. During this cyclical event, there were incidents of violence, counter-demonstrators and the police were being attacked. Repeated attempts have been made to ban or block the event, but they were unsuccessful.
During this march, comments were made on: refugees and the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, the climate crisis and energy transformation, LGBT and cultural changes in Europe.
